After acquisition of the worldwide rights to the book of Peter Norden and script development (Andrew Birkin) at full speed: surprise call from Giulio Sbarigia (Oceania Rome).
Apparently the Italians were two months away from beginning of principal photography of a Tinto Brass motion picture based on the same material. Legal told us that "Kitty Schmidt" could be regarded as a "character in public domain". When 20th Century Fox came on board for the Brass picture it seemed wiser to cut risk and potential losses and join the Italians.
Viewing the rough cut in Rome the German side (distributors/ financiers) had repeated occurrences of cardiac arrest - but not much choice other than to go along. It could therefore be said that "Salon Kitty" turned out to be an expensive exercise in set design (Ken Adam) – the only aspect worth watching... |

anthea was responsible for the organization and hiring of the international cast, which was the basis of for its coproduction/ financial contribution.
During the ten day reading rehearsal between Mick Jagger, Maximilian Schell and Rebecca DeMornay, Mrs. DeMornay unexpectedly decided she didn't like the director. Upon her return to New York she contacted Dimitri Nabokov in an attempt to outbid the valid option agreement for Nabokov's rights. Stunned by this event the director refused to continue to work with her and proposed a then unknown actress by the name of Maryam D'Abo. This caused anthea to withdraw as anthea's distributors (Miramax/ Vestron et al) wouldn't accept this sort of down-casting.
anthea's partner continued to keep the production alive for a few more days causing abundant sardonic comments in the local "Weißwurst"-press. |

Leonard Peltier is a Native American activist and member of the American Indian Movement (AIM). In 1977 he was sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment for the murders of two FBI Agents who died during a 1975 shoot-out on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, site of the 1973 Wounded Knee Incident (a 71- day stand-off between entrenched AIM activists and FBI agents and the National Guard).
The shoot-out occurred after a juvenile offender had stolen a pair of sneakers at a shop on the reservation. Two agents of the ever present FBI chased the kid, harassing and threatening inhabitants of the Pine Ridge reservation. An already tense atmosphere exploded, resulting in the deaths of the two agents for which L. Peltier two years later was found guilty.
In the development process AIM trusted Stone and Matthiesen sufficiently and arranged a filmed interview with the individual who purported to be the person who shot the two agents in self defence. Some of the material was licensed to CBS and shown on "60 Minutes" in an effort to help the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee to get the case reheard (but without success).
Distribution and financing could never be fully secured (in the prevailing atmosphere in Hollywood) and the project had to be abandoned.
The project stands in line with Costa Gavra's "State of Siege" which described and foresaw a comparable political environment in South America (S. Allende).
When Bill Clinton left office he pardoned 176 persons (among them Marc Rich) but Peltier, sentenced on questionable evidence (see Amnesty International), was not one of them.
