  "La photographie..."

"La photographie..."

"La photographie c'est la vérité. Et le cinéma c'est 24 fois la vérité par seconde."

"Photography is truth. And cinema is truth twenty-four times a second."

Jean-Luc Godard, Le petit Soldat, 1961

  Army of Shadows

J.P. Melville shot "Army of Shadows" in 1969 with Lino Ventura, Simone Signoret, Paul Meurisse et al.

The story line treats German occupation of France and the French Resistance movement struggling against it. The subtext of the movie deals with archetypical "Melville"-ian topics such as friendship, loyalty, trust and betrayal. Since the picture obviously shows a rather unfavourable image of German behaviour during that period it wasn't released in Germany. In 1978 Hans Brockmann convinced Francois Duplat and his NEF Diffusion (to release it to very limited German audience response).

  Stéphane Duroy: Unknown

2007:
anthea associates co-published photojournalist Stéphane Duroy's book "Unknown"

The intent of this project after the tragedies that shook 20th century Europe was to envisage America as a land of asylum, a receptacle of the Old World's dramas and an optimistic transformation of the brutality and misery of its wars and revolutions. In the interest of focus, Stéphane Duroy has limited his field of investigation to New York, entry point to America, and the State of Montana, where the slow migration towards the unknown reaches its completion.
